Standard High School-Ndejje, Nakasongola Army Secondary School, Luwero Secondary School and Ndejje Secondary School are among the institutions expected to be closely watched come Friday, June 26, 2026, as the USSSA Luwero Zone Athletics Championship takes center stage at Bombo Barracks.
The championship will bring together schools from the five districts that make up the USSSA- Luwero Zone, namely Luwero, Nakaseke, Nakasongola, Kiboga and Kyankwanzi, to battle for top honors and select the zone’s athletics team that will represent the region at the USSSA National Ball Games II Athletics Championship scheduled for next month at Sacred Heart Secondary School in Gulu City.
This year’s competition carries added significance for the zone following last year’s disappointment when USSSA-Luwero failed to field a team at the USSSA National Ball Games II Athletics Championship hosted by St. Peter’s College Tororo.
Determined to avoid a repeat of that setback, zone leaders have intensified talent identification efforts by encouraging schools from across the region to participate in the athletics championship and showcase emerging talent.
The event is expected to attract hundreds of student-athletes competing in various track and field disciplines, with school’s eager to earn a place on the zonal team that will carry USSSA- Luwero’s hopes at the national championships.
Speaking to Wallnetnews Digital, USSSA Luwero Zone Chairman Maj. Isaac Chanda expressed confidence that the championship will produce a highly competitive team capable of challenging for national honours.
“Several schools from all the five districts that make up the USSSA- Luwero Zone have confirmed their participation, and we expect stiff competition across all race events and athletics disciplines,” Maj. Chanda said.
He revealed that a dedicated scouting team has already been assembled to identify outstanding talent during the championship.
“I want to assure the other USSSA zones that by next week, we shall have selected a strong team that will represent Greater Luwero at the national championships in Gulu. After the team selection process, we shall leave no stone unturned in preparing our athletes,” he added.
Maj. Chanda further outlined the zone’s ambitious target of winning the national athletics title.
“Our goal is to win the USSSA National Ball Games II Athletics trophy. We are determined to build a strong team and compete for the top prize. Other zones, including host USSSA Acholi Zone, should be prepared because Greater Luwero is coming with serious intentions,” he said.
With schools intensifying preparations and athlete’s eager to impress selectors, the Bombo Barracks championship promises to be a major showcase of talent and a crucial step in Greater Luwero’s mission to establish itself as a formidable force in school athletics.
As the countdown continues, all eyes will be on the region’s leading schools and rising stars as they compete for a chance to represent Greater Luwero on the national stage in Gulu next month.
