Nankabirwa Memorial Secondary School once again underlined their dominance in Luwero District netball after successfully defending the USSSA Luwero District Ball Games II Netball title with a hard-fought 25-18 victory over Amazing Grace High School in the final.
The champions had to dig deep in a fiercely contested encounter before eventually overcoming their determined opponents to retain the coveted trophy and reaffirm their status as the undisputed queens of school netball in Luwero District.
The championship was part of the successful Phase One of the USSSA Ball Games II qualifiers hosted by St. Mary’s Secondary School Zirobwe and co-hosted by Bulemeezi Secondary School. The tournament attracted more than 60 secondary schools from across the district competing in various sporting disciplines including netball, volleyball, handball, lacrosse and mind games.
This year’s qualifiers registered a remarkable increase in participation compared to previous editions despite concerns surrounding the Ebola outbreak. Organizers received praise for implementing effective screening mechanisms that helped identify overage, underage and un transferred players who were subsequently barred from participating in the competition.
A number of Primary Seven repeaters were also detected and prevented from taking part in the tournament, ensuring strict adherence to USSSA regulations. Schools complied with tournament requirements by presenting online-generated albums and observing all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
The competition was further enhanced by improved branding, organization and quality awards, reflecting the district’s commitment to raising standards in school sports.
Attention now shifts to Phase Two of the USSSA Luwero District qualifiers, scheduled for June 18-20, 2026, at St. Andrew’s Kasaala Secondary School. The football U-17 championship is expected to attract a large number of schools as organizers continue their efforts to promote quality competition while ensuring compliance with USSSA guidelines.
The phased approach was adopted to allow learners to participate in multiple sporting disciplines, ensure strict observance of competition rules and SOPs, and provide an opportunity for schools to showcase talent in a well-organized environment.
Meanwhile, several schools have secured qualification to the USSSA Greater Luwero Zone Championships scheduled to take place in Nakasongola District on June 28, 2026.
With qualification slots secured, the focus now turns to the Greater Luwero Zone Championships where the district’s finest schools will battle for places at the regional and national stages. For Nankabirwa Memorial SS, the mission remains clear: continue their impressive netball dominance and pursue further glory beyond the district level.
