The Acting Vice Chancellor of Lira University, Dr. Andrew Ojulong, has commended the National Council of Sports (NCS) for selecting Lira University as the site for the construction of a modern training facility that will support Uganda’s preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Dr. Ojulong described the project as a significant investment that will not only strengthen sports development in Northern Uganda but also leave a lasting legacy for the region long after the continental tournament.

“The facility will support sports activities during and after AFCON. We are happy with the Government for this positive gesture,” Dr. Ojulong said.

He noted that the training pitch will serve as a key support facility for Akibua Stadium in Lira City during the AFCON tournament and will become a catalyst for sports development, economic growth, tourism promotion, youth empowerment, and community engagement across the region.

According to Dr. Ojulong, the project will provide local athletes with access to improved training facilities, helping to nurture talent and enhance Uganda’s competitiveness on the international stage.

“The training facility will offer numerous benefits for the northern region and serve as a catalyst for sports development, economic growth, and tourism. It will support youth development and community engagement while complementing Akibua Stadium during AFCON,” he added.

His remarks came during a site visit by officials from the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) and Lira University management on June 10, 2026, to assess the progress of the ongoing construction works.

Speaking during the visit, UPDF’s Capt. Jimmy Omara assured stakeholders that the project remains on schedule and will be completed within the stipulated time frame.

Capt. Omara revealed that substantial progress had already been made, including the mobilization of construction materials, deployment of human resources, and site clearance works.

“Serious works have started with mobilization of building materials and human resources, clearing the site, among others. We are committed to ensuring the facility is completed as scheduled,” Capt. Omara said.

The project is being implemented by the National Enterprise Corporation (NEC), the commercial arm of the UPDF, which was awarded the construction contract.

The site inspection was led by Dr. Ojulong and attended by members of the university management team, including Academic Registrar Mr. Angela Geoffrey and other university officials.

Dr. Ojulong emphasized that beyond sports, the facility is expected to stimulate economic activity in Lira and the wider Northern Uganda region through job creation and increased business opportunities.

He explained that major sporting events attract visitors, creating demand for accommodation, transportation, food services, and other tourism-related enterprises.

“With increased tourism and event attendance, local businesses such as hotels, restaurants, transportation services, and craft vendors will benefit significantly,” he said.

He further stressed that investments in modern sports infrastructure are crucial in enhancing Uganda’s international reputation and positioning the country as a competitive destination for hosting major sporting events.

As Uganda continues preparations to co-host the 2027 AFCON tournament, the construction of the Lira University training facility represents another important milestone in the country’s broader sports infrastructure development agenda.

Once completed, the facility is expected to play a critical role during AFCON while providing a long-term sporting legacy for Northern Uganda and future generations of athletes.
