The President of the Uganda Olympic Committee/Commonwealth Games Uganda (UOC/CGU), Dr. Donald Rukare, has reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to promoting Olympism and the Olympic values among young people, describing sport as a powerful tool for personal growth, leadership development, and social transformation.

Dr. Rukare made the remarks during the 11th Edition of the Olympic Values Contest 2026, which brought together students from various schools to engage in debates and discussions centered on the Olympic values of Excellence, Friendship, and Respect.

“Promoting Olympism and Olympic values remains a key focus for us at the Olympics. These values are not only important in sport but should guide our daily lives as we strive to become better citizens and leaders,” Dr. Rukare said.

He encouraged students to cultivate meaningful friendships, respect diverse opinions, and pursue excellence both in academics and sports. He further challenged them to become responsible citizens who positively contribute to their communities.

The UOC President highlighted sport as a platform that opens doors to numerous opportunities, including education, leadership development, cultural exchange, and international exposure.

“Sport is more than competition. It creates opportunities, builds character, develops leadership skills, and allows young people to interact with others from different backgrounds and cultures. I encourage all students to actively participate in sports alongside their studies,” he said.

Dr. Rukare also reminded participants that the Olympic Movement is built on values that transcend winning medals and trophies.

“The Olympic Movement is about connecting people, learning from one another, fostering mutual respect, and using sport as a force for positive change in society,” he noted.

Speaking to Wallnetnews Digital after the event, Dr. Rukare expressed satisfaction with the success of this year’s competition.

“The 11th edition of the Olympic Values Contest brought together 27 schools and about 200 students who participated in insightful debates on themes aligned to the Olympic values of respect, friendship, and excellence. We were thrilled to associate with the hosts, Olive School, the debate judges from the Debate Society of Uganda, and our honored guest, reigning Miss Uganda 2026, Ms. Trivia Elle Muhooza, who delivered inspiring remarks to the young participants on self-awareness and the empowerment of athletes, especially the girl child. We look forward to the 12th edition next year,” he said.

Meanwhile, reigning Miss Uganda 2026, Ms. Trivia Elle Muhooza, encouraged students to embrace Olympic values not only during competitions but also in their everyday lives.

She emphasized that true success is measured by character and values rather than victories alone.

“Success goes beyond winning. It is reflected in respect, friendship, excellence, fair play, peace, and humanity. These are values that should guide you every day,” Ms. Muhooza told the students.

She urged learners to believe in themselves, communicate confidently, listen to others, and always strive to give their best in every situation.

“Every participant is a winner because of the courage to take part, the lessons learned, and the values you choose to uphold long after the contest ends,” she added.

As a role model for many young people, particularly girls, Ms. Muhooza challenged students to pursue their dreams with confidence, determination, and purpose.

The Olympic Values Contest continues to serve as an important platform for promoting the ideals of Olympism among young people, using debate and dialogue to encourage critical thinking, leadership, and positive citizenship while strengthening the values of respect, friendship, and excellence across Uganda’s school communities.
