The National Resistance Movement (NRM) Vice Chairperson for Buganda Region and State Minister for Regional Cooperation, Haruna Kasolo Kyeyune, has vowed to deliver a landslide victory for the party’s candidate, Idah Nabayiga, in the upcoming Kalangala District Woman Member of Parliament by-election.
Kasolo made the remarks on Sunday after joining the NRM Party Secretariat campaign team in Kalangala District, where he was received by NRM Electoral Commission Commissioner Ambassador James Williams Kinobe and other district party officials before holding a strategic mobilisation meeting.
The team is in Kalangala to rally support for Nabayiga, who is competing against four other candidates in the highly anticipated by-election.
Addressing party leaders, mobilisers, and supporters at Kasekulo Landing Site, Kasolo pledged to remain in the district until the NRM secures victory at the polls.
“I am not leaving until we deliver victory for our candidate. Send us a leader we can work with, a person who understands your needs and can effectively present them so that the government can address them,” Kasolo said.
He urged voters to elect a representative who understands the challenges facing the people of Kalangala and can effectively articulate their concerns to the government.
Kasolo argued that Nabayiga is better positioned to represent the interests of the district, noting that she hails from the area and understands the aspirations of the local population.
“Who says this seat is hereditary?” Kasolo asked, in an apparent reference to critics and rival candidates.
The minister also assured residents that the government is committed to resolving challenges affecting the fishing community, revealing that the newly appointed State Minister for Fisheries, Robert Migadde, is already working on interventions to address the sector’s concerns.
Kasolo cautioned NRM supporters against being provoked by opposition groups during the campaign period.
“Soon they will come from Kampala to create headlines and make news. Don’t allow yourselves to be confused because you already have your candidate,” he said.
To strengthen the party’s grassroots campaign, Kasolo challenged every party leader and mobiliser to recruit at least 20 voters in support of Nabayiga.
“Through strategy, organisation, and hard work, we shall achieve a landslide victory,” he said.
He further encouraged residents to actively participate in government wealth creation programmes such as the Parish Development Model (PDM), Emyooga, Youth Livelihood Programme, and Women Empowerment Funds, saying these initiatives are intended to improve household incomes and livelihoods.
Meanwhile, Ambassador James Williams Kinobe expressed confidence in the NRM’s prospects, citing the positive reception the campaign team has received across the district.
“The reception from the people has been amazing. At the village level, residents are responding positively to our message and showing strong support for our candidate,” Kinobe said.
He added that Nabayiga’s campaign has attracted support from various political leaders, including Members of Parliament, councillors, and other influential stakeholders within the district.
The Kalangala District Woman MP by-election has attracted significant political attention, with both the ruling NRM and opposition parties intensifying their campaigns ahead of polling day. However, NRM leaders remain optimistic that the party’s strong grassroots structures and support base in the district will deliver victory for their candidate.
