Uganda Prisons Netball Club captain Christine Namulumba Kango has applauded the Commissioner General of Prisons, Canon Dr. Johnson Byabashaija, for giving the team the opportunity and support to represent Uganda on the regional stage following her latest individual accolade.

Namulumba was named the Fortebet Real Stars Netball Player of the Month for May after a series of outstanding performances both locally and internationally.

The award was presented during a ceremony held on Tuesday at Naijing Restaurant in Kampala, where the Uganda Prisons star edged KCCA Netball Club’s Margaret Baagala and Police Netball Club’s Joan Nantumbwe to claim the monthly honor.

Her recognition comes after leading Uganda Prisons to a historic triumph at the East Africa Netball Club Championship held in Nairobi, Kenya.

During the tournament, Uganda Prisons produced one of the most memorable performances in recent years, defeating regional powerhouse National Insurance Corporation (NIC) Netball Club of Kenya twice. The Ugandan side first overcame NIC during the group stages before repeating the feat in the championship final to secure the coveted regional title.

The victory ended years of waiting for continental success and marked a significant milestone for Uganda Prisons Netball Club.

Speaking after receiving the award, Namulumba dedicated the accolade to the entire Uganda Prisons family and thanked the institution’s leadership for its continued support towards the development of netball.

“I am very grateful for this other milestone. I thank the Commissioner General of Prisons, Canon Dr. Johnson Byabashaija, for granting us the opportunity to represent the country in the game of netball. I also thank my teammates and coaches who always motivate me,” Namulumba said.

The experienced player noted that the support extended by the Uganda Prisons administration has played a key role in enabling the club to compete successfully at both national and regional levels.

This is the third time Namulumba has won the prestigious Fortebet Real Stars award, having previously claimed the accolade in December 2022 and April 2023, underlining her consistency as one of Uganda’s finest netball players.

For Namulumba, the award adds another chapter to an already successful season that saw her inspire Uganda Prisons to regional glory and reaffirm her status among the leading figures in Ugandan netball.
