Race for 2027 USSSA National Boys Football Championship hosting rights heats up

By Emmanuel Sekago

The race to host the 2027 Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) National Boys Football Championship is gathering momentum, with Mbarara High School, Kabalega Secondary School and Nyakasura School stepping up preparations ahead of their anticipated presentations to the Ministry of Education and Sports’ Physical Education and Sports Department (PES-D) and the USSSA Executive.

The three schools have submitted bids to host the prestigious national championship, and an inspection team from USSSA and the Ministry of Education and Sports has concluded assessments of their facilities and other hosting requirements.

With the inspection exercise completed, attention has now shifted to the next stage, where the bidding schools are expected to demonstrate their readiness, organisational capacity and plans for delivering a successful championship.

According to WallNetNews Digital sources within the three institutions, each school is working around the clock to prepare a compelling PowerPoint presentation to defend its bid when invited to appear before the Ministry and USSSA Executive in the coming weeks.

The competition is expected to be intense, given the rich sporting histories of the three institutions and their respective ambitions to bring the country’s biggest secondary school boys’ football championship to their regions.

Mbarara High School, popularly known as Chaapa, is seeking an opportunity to host the National Boys Football Championship for the first time.

The school, based in the Ankole sub-region, is banking on its sporting heritage, available facilities, community support and organisational plans to convince the selection team that it is ready to stage the national event.

For Mbarara High School, securing the hosting rights would represent an important milestone in its sporting journey and an opportunity to showcase the potential of the Ankole region as a destination for major school sports competitions.

The school will need to demonstrate how it intends to accommodate participating teams, provide suitable playing facilities, ensure security and organise the logistical requirements associated with a national championship.

Unlike Mbarara High School, Nyakasura School and Kabalega Secondary School have previously hosted national boys’ football competitions, giving them experience they can draw on as they prepare to defend their bids.

Nyakasura School, located in Fort Portal Tourism City, hosted the 2023 USSSA National Boys Football Championship from May 7 to 21, 2023.

The tournament attracted 64 secondary schools from across Uganda, with the opening ceremony officiated by State Minister for Education and Sports, Hon. Peter Ogwang.

Nyakasura, renowned for its distinctive Scottish-kilt school uniform, made a winning start to its campaign, defeating Sironko Progressive Academy 1–0 in the opening match.

Its experience of hosting the 2023 championship could prove valuable as the school seeks to convince the selection team that it can once again deliver a well-organised national tournament.

Kabalega Secondary School, based in Masindi in the Bunyoro sub-region, also has a long history in national school football.

The institution hosted the prestigious Copa Coca-Cola National Boys Football Championship finals in 1999 and 2006, before the competition continued under the USSSA banner.

The school’s grounds have witnessed memorable national football encounters, including the 2006 finals, when St Mary’s Kitende claimed the national title.

Kabalega is therefore expected to draw on its historical contribution to school football and its experience hosting major competitions as it seeks to secure the 2027 edition.

The final decision will depend on the assessment of the schools’ facilities, organisational capacity and ability to meet the requirements for hosting a national championship.

Games teachers from various schools, speaking to WallNetNews Digital, have weighed in on the contest, with views divided over which of the three institutions would be the most suitable host.

The bidding schools are expected to use their presentations to outline their strengths, address any concerns identified during inspections and demonstrate how they would ensure the smooth running of the tournament.

Beyond the football pitches, hosting a national championship requires careful planning in areas such as accommodation, meals, transport, medical services, security, officiating and the general welfare of student-athletes and officials.

The 2027 championship is expected to bring together schools from across Uganda, providing the successful host with an opportunity to showcase its facilities, promote local tourism and stimulate business activity.

As the three institutions fine-tune their presentations, the contest has moved beyond submitting bids to demonstrating which school can turn its promises into a successful national sporting event.

For Mbarara High School, it is a chance to make history. For Nyakasura School and Kabalega Secondary School, it is an opportunity to draw on their previous hosting experience and return the national football spotlight to their respective regions.

The final decision now rests with the Ministry of Education and Sports and the USSSA leadership after considering the inspection findings and the schools’ presentations.
