The NRM Deputy National Treasurer and outgoing Chairperson of the Parliamentary Alumni Association (PAU) , Hon Jacqueline Kyatuheire, has hailed the launch of an insurance scheme for former Members of Parliament as a major milestone in improving the welfare and social protection of retired legislators.

Speaking at the launch, Kyatuheire said the initiative crowns seven years of building the Parliamentary Alumni Association into a strong and vibrant organisation that continues to unite former MPs from the First to the 11th Parliament.

She recalled that the association was established in 2019 to reconnect former legislators who had become scattered across the country after leaving Parliament.

“When we started this association in 2019, our objective was to bring together former Members of Parliament and create a platform through which they could remain connected, support one another and continue contributing to national development,” she said.

Kyatuheire noted that over the years, the association has grown into a thriving network promoting social cohesion, economic empowerment, mentorship and mutual support among former legislators.

She said one of the association’s greatest achievements has been fostering solidarity, ensuring members remain in touch and are able to support colleagues facing personal, health or financial challenges.

The NRM Deputy National Treasurer also commended the leadership of Parliament for recognising and working closely with the Parliamentary Alumni Association.

“We appreciate the Speaker and the leadership of Parliament for their continued recognition and support. That partnership has enabled us to strengthen our programmes and better serve our members,” she said.

Kyatuheire described the newly launched insurance scheme, which provides life, health and last-expense cover, as a timely intervention that will improve the well-being of former MPs.

She observed that many legislators leave Parliament later in life when healthcare and social protection become increasingly important.

“I have witnessed former Members of Parliament pass away under difficult circumstances. This insurance scheme will provide much-needed support during illness and ensure dignity and assistance for members and their families,” she said.

She added that the insurance programme marks the beginning of broader welfare initiatives that the association intends to introduce in the future.

Reflecting on her seven-year tenure as chairperson, Kyatuheire expressed gratitude for the progress made since the association’s formation.

“I leave office as a happy and fulfilled woman. The seed we planted has grown into a strong institution, and I am confident it will continue growing from strength to strength,” she said.

The Parliamentary Alumni Association brings together former Members of Parliament to promote fellowship, welfare, mentorship and continued contribution to Uganda’s socio-economic transformation long after public service.
