The Minister of State for Sports, Hon. Peter Ogwang, has expressed confidence that Team Uganda is fully prepared and will be highly competitive at the forthcoming Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
Ogwang made the remarks during a courtesy visit to the Commonwealth Sport Headquarters, located at 8 Storey’s Gate, London, SW1P 3AY, where he was accompanied by the General Secretary of the National Council of Sports (NCS), Dr. Bernard Ogwel.
The Ugandan delegation held discussions with Commonwealth Sport Chief Executive Officer Ms. Katie Sadleir and Commonwealth Sport President Dr. Donald Rukare.
The delegation was welcomed by Dr. Donald Rukare, a distinguished Ugandan sports administrator who made history as the first African to be elected President of Commonwealth Sport.
During the meeting, Dr. Rukare briefed the delegation on key Commonwealth Sport programmes and preparations for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, which are now just 13 days away.
Speaking during the meeting, Hon. Peter Ogwang reaffirmed Uganda’s readiness for the Games, saying the country’s athletes have prepared well and are ready to compete against the best from across the Commonwealth.
“Team Uganda is fully prepared and ready to compete. We are confident that our athletes will be highly competitive and proudly represent Uganda on the Commonwealth stage. Government remains committed to supporting sports development, and we believe our investment in athlete preparation will yield positive results in Glasgow,” Ogwang said.
Uganda will send a 53-member delegation to Scotland, comprising 35 female and 18 male athletes, making it one of the country’s most inclusive Commonwealth Games teams.
The athletes will compete in 10 sporting disciplines, including Para-Swimming and Para-Powerlifting, highlighting Uganda’s commitment to promoting inclusivity in sport.
The high-level engagement forms part of Uganda’s wider sports diplomacy mission in London, which also saw the country achieve another major milestone after securing admission as the first East African nation to join the Invictus Games Foundation community.
The visit underscored Uganda’s growing influence in international sport and reaffirmed the country’s commitment to strengthening partnerships while positioning its athletes for success on the global stage at the upcoming Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
