Opposition politician Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi was reportedly detained at a security checkpoint in Mpigi District just hours after being released on bail following seven months on remand.
According to National Unity Platform (NUP) Secretary General Lewis Rubongoya, Kivumbi was intercepted by security personnel on Friday while travelling from his home in Butambala District to Kampala. He said the officers stopped his vehicle at a roadblock in Mpigi before taking him to an undisclosed location.
By press time, it was unclear which security agency was responsible for the reported arrest, and no official statement had been issued regarding any fresh charges against the opposition politician.
The reported detention came shortly after Kivumbi addressed hundreds of supporters who had gathered at his home to welcome him following his release from prison. During the gathering, he said his time in detention had strengthened rather than weakened his resolve to remain active in opposition politics.
Kivumbi told supporters he intended to take a brief two-day break before resuming political activities, pledging to continue advocating for political change. He expressed hope that his efforts would inspire others to carry on the struggle regardless of the challenges involved.
During his address, Kivumbi also criticised Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba and members of the First Family, remarks that attracted widespread public attention and sparked political debate.
