Kampala – There are no more underdogs in the Uganda Netball Super league as it used to be those years for one club to be dominant for a whole season.

The menu at the Luzira netball courts, the home of the Uganda Netball Super League club Uganda Prisons had four games and the epic one came as the last fixture of the day where the Mukono-based team-UCU Angels took on the resilient Makindye community club-Weyonje netball club.

The totally changed UCU Angels in terms of game display and playing staff started strong with the system of playing short passes and on a high speed, won the first two quarters of the game but with only a margin of two goals.

The first two quarters ended 11-09, 20-18 respectively, however, as title contenders, the Makindye based club-Weyonje came back stronger in the third quarter ending 28-27.

The last quarter came when the center pass was in favor of UCU Angels which took the match to a draw until the last one minute a one Linda Muzigo. UCU’s goalkeeper stole an important ball and changed the proceedings.

When they reclaimed their lead, UCU only maintained it until the final whistle and the latter completed a double against the Makindye division-based side.

“As UCU we are happy for a win, we came as a determined side to win today and the cooperation within the team helped us to win. We are very many in the team but today we decided to play only seven and played the entire game and we exhibited the best. I thank my shooters, and the whole team, we made mistakes since netball is a game of mistakes but in the end we won it,” Linda Muzigo, a shooter turned a defender said.

The result meant that UCU subjected Weyonje to their fourth loss of the season, and the former collected four points off the latter this season.

Weyonje’s tactician, Asiimwe Jesse put the blame on the umpires’ performance and the low endurance of his players especially in the last quarter.

“Let me say it wasn’t our luck, we had all the chances to kill off the game in third quarter but we didn’t make it but also the umpires need to work on a number of areas, their speed and if they have optical problems, they need to let us know because you can’t say that a defense of League MVP (Nassaka Shakirah) and a She Cranes player (Kadondi Faridah) couldn’t make any interception in the entire game, it gives us a bad image.

Also the endurance of my players, we have not been training that much, we rested because we didn’t know when the league was resuming, being UCU is an institution, they have been training and our fitness levels were not matching,” he explained.

UCU Angels also maintained their 5th place now on 19 points in 14 games; the win is their ninth of the season.

Meanwhile, in the other fixtures of the day host Uganda Prisons found no hurdle to beat Posta 82-23 while KCCA humbled Busia Greater Lions 87-34 and in the earlier fixture, Busia lost 44-60 to UPDF.

Currently, Uganda Prisons tops the log with 26 points in 15 matches, followed by KCCA in the second position with 26 points in 13 games and National Insurance Corporation in the third position, also Christine Namulumba of Uganda Prisons tops the scorers chart with 485 goals one better than Sera Zam of NIC.

The league matches this Saturday head to at Kibuli Children Centre netball courts, the home of Uganda super league club  Weyonje.
