Uganda’s Capital City Kampala among 100 Cities at World City’s Summit 2024 in Singapore

Singapore –Uganda’s Capital City Kampala has yet appeared on the international scene at the World Cities Summit 2024 in Singapore.

The event that took place on Friday this week, gathered a total of about 100 cities and among these was Uganda’s Capita City Kampala.

This was attended by Kampala’s Executive Director Dorothy Kisaka. The World Cities Summit 2024, gathered to reflect, reimagine and reinvent a future for all.

At the summit, Mexico City was declared the winner of the Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize at the prestigious award banquet hosted by His Excellency, Tharman Shanmugaratnam, the President of Singapore.

The KCCA Executive Director Ms. Dorothy Kisaka represented Kampala City at the summit session of Female leaders leading urban innovations session.

She highlighted the need for international community involvement in building cities, leveraging on existing government policies of devolution and decentralisation to involve the grassroots in building smart resilient cities.

According to Kisaka, Kampala Capital City was among the approximate 3500 participants at the summit.

Speaking with our correspondent, Kisaka said that several cities pitched their ongoing innovations to build smart resilient cities, tackling the climate change challenges and other urban issues.

The biennial World Cities Summit (WCS) is a global platform for government leaders and industry experts to address liveable and sustainable city challenges, share integrated urban solutions and forge new partnerships.

Since 2008, WCS has seen the participation of over 250 cities from around the world, represented by leaders from government, business, international organisations and academia.

The 9th edition of the World Cities Summit will be held from 2 to 4 June 2024, in Singapore.

This 3-day event comprises the main conference and other key events such as the WCS Mayors Forum, WCS Young Leaders Symposium, the Lee Kuan Yew World Prize Award Ceremony and Banquet, and an exhibition.

The theme for WCS 2024 was; ‘Liveable and Sustainable Cities: Rejuvenate, Reinvent, Reimagine’.

And according to Kampala’s Executive director, truly thriving cities are those which deliver on well-being for all in the city, and across generations. She added that to continue doing so amidst the climactic, financial and societal stresses of time, cities must continually evolve and adapt.

World Cities summit 2024, explored the opportunities and the how-to’s to achieve smart, resilient and regenerative cities now and in the future, cities with heart that deliver good quality of life for all.

More so, delegates will engage with the theme across five thematic tracks: Cities for People, Resilient & Regenerative Cities, Smart Cities, Sustainable Financing of Cities and Future Cities.

Each track comprises plenaries and in-depth discussion sessions, special convening and roundtables, organised with strategic partners to ensure a rich and diverse discussion.
