The belts, which are the most prestigious awards in local boxing, were presented by the President of the Uganda Boxing Federation (UBF), Moses Muhangi. The event is slated for 26th December 2023 (Boxing Day) at UMA Grounds in Kampala.
The boxing federation’s president who was flanked by representatives from the league organizers (Top Boy Promotions) and sponsors/partners emphasized the significance of winning these belts, which signify the highest level of accomplishment for local boxers. It’s the first time that belts will be given out in the season finale.
“It’s going to be a great event because it’s the first of it’s kind,” Muhangi noted adding that; “if I was a boxer in the finale, winning the belt would be something I look forward to because it’s worth it. It’s going to be the most prestigious belt in local boxing.”
Muhangi revealed that each belt costs about USD 1,000. The belts will be given out to 13 weight categories for males and 12 weight categories for females.
Seth Mulali who is the Director of Top Boy Promotions noted that introduction of the belts is a sign that the league is growing and there are big things on the way.
“We believe that the belts will motivate the boxers, both in the finals and not. Winning is not just about money, visible and physical prizes like belts are important as well,” Mulali said adding that; “we want to ensure that boxers in the league take pride in it by adding new initiatives like the belts.”
The presser was also attended by some of the competing boxers, who expressed their determination to win the coveted belts and become champions of their respective categories.
