REFEREE BONDO FINALLY CALL IT QUITS

Botswana’s highly ranked referee, Joshua Bondo has finally retired from the game after 22 years as middle man. Bondo started officiating locally in August 2001 and developed into one of the best referees in the continent.
The 45 year old Senete-born retires amid controversy which saw him slapped by six months suspension by CAF. This was after inaccurate reporting on CMS during the match between Benin and Rwanda. Since April 2023, Bondo has been on the sidelines not even allowed to officiate in Botswana Premier League. After the expiry of his suspension, Bondo has written to Botswana Football Association (BFA) to inform about his retirement.
According to a source, Bondo wants to give back to Botswana football by developing referees who can dominate the continent in the future. “Despite his unfortunate suspension early this year, Bondo has been a role model to many aspiring referees. His suspension was due to human error and we cannot forget that he has flown our flag at three African Cup of Nations. He has officiated big matches in the continent both at club and national level . So it is important that he grooms future referees because we are not well represented in continental football,” said our source.
Bondo has officiated at three African Cup of Nations in 2017, 2019 and 2022 and 2016 CHAN tournament in Rwanda.  He was also the fourth official at the 2019 CAF Champions League final.
