The Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) celebrated the remarkable achievements of Uganda’s school football teams with a special luncheon at the Imperial Royal Hotel in Kampala on Friday, May 31st 2024. This event honored the outstanding performances at both the ISF World Cup and the CAF Africa Schools Football Championship in Zanzibar.

Among the honorees were Amus College School, which proudly brought home a Silver medal from the ISF World Cup, and Bukedea Comprehensive School, which earned a Bronze medal. Kawempe Muslim School’s girls’ team was also celebrated for securing a Bronze medal at the CAF Schools Championship.

Despite their strong efforts, not all teams reached the podium. St. Mary’s Kitende boys’ team faced tough competition and did not advance at the CAF Championship, while Amus College girls finished in 8th place and St. Mary’s College Kisubi secured the 32nd position at the ISF World Cup.

The luncheon was a momentous occasion filled with pride and joy, as students, coaches, and officials gathered to reflect on their journeys and achievements. USSSA President, Justus Mugisha, commended all the teams for their dedication, discipline, and outstanding representation of Uganda on international stages. He emphasized the significance of sports in fostering unity and nurturing young talents across the nation.

In attendance were notable figures from Uganda’s sports community, representatives from the Ministry of Education and Sports, and various sponsors and partners who have supported the development of school sports in Uganda. The celebration not only acknowledged the teams’ successes but also highlighted the crucial role of sports in shaping the future of Ugandan youth.

David Katende, the National Council of Sports Assistant General Secretary who represented Sports Minister, Hon. Peter Ogwang, thanked USSSA for the four aspects of sports in good use.

“There are four aspects in sports; practicing, participating, Performance and recognition. Therefore I would like to thank USSSA for taking us through these steps and now we are at the point of recognizing these athletes. To the students, use your time in school to reach the best version of yourself. Schools should desist from creating clubs inside schools. You find a school and students refer to some students as “ballers” Are ballers not students?”

The success of these schools at the ISF World Cup and the CAF Africa Schools Football Championship marks a significant milestone for USSSA. It serves as an inspiration for other schools across Uganda, showcasing the potential of Ugandan students to excel in sports on an international level. This encourages further investment in sports programs and facilities in schools nationwide.

Kazaire Mark Ahimbisibwe, the captain of Team Uganda’s delegation to China, also shared his remarks during the luncheon.

He expressed immense pride in the team’s achievements and gratitude for the support they received.
“Standing here today, I am filled with immense pride and gratitude,” Kazaire began. “Representing Uganda on such a prestigious international stage has been a remarkable experience for all of us. Competing at the ISF World Cup in China was not just about playing football; it was about showcasing the talent and spirit of our nation.”

Kazaire praised his teammates for their dedication and hard work, emphasizing the unity and camaraderie that fueled their success. “Our journey was challenging, but the support we gave each other, both on and off the field, made all the difference. Each player brought their best, and together, we achieved something truly special.”

He also acknowledged the role of coaches, staff, and the Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) in their success. “Our coaches and support staff played a pivotal role in our performance. Their guidance and encouragement were invaluable. We are also deeply grateful to USSSA for their unwavering support and for organizing this wonderful celebration.”

Kazaire concluded his remarks with a hopeful message for the future. “Our achievements are just the beginning. We have set a standard for future teams, and I believe that Ugandan school sports will continue to grow and excel on the international stage. Let us keep working hard, stay united, and strive for even greater heights.”

His heartfelt speech was met with applause and admiration from the audience, reinforcing the spirit of pride and unity that the luncheon aimed to celebrate.

Meanwhile, The luncheon concluded with a commitment from USSSA to continue supporting and nurturing young talents, ensuring that Uganda remains a strong contender in international school sports competitions.
