Swala Safaris hosts successful seventh edition of Art in Me Festival

Sunday, 21st April 2024 marked the seventh edition of the Art in Me Festival, held at the Uganda Museum in Kampala. This interschool art extravaganza celebrates the diverse artistic expressions that shape Uganda and beyond. Emphasizing culture, students showcase their talents in music, dance, drama, fashion and poetry.

Organized by Swala Safaris, the annual festival attracts schools from various parts of the country. The event aims to use art and culture to instill the spirit of patriotism and promote tourism among youngsters.

“This year, our theme is ‘Take Me To Uganda,’ where we challenge young people to promote their country. They can use their talents in music, dance, poetry, and fashion to showcase the Uganda they live in,” said Julius Sekajja, Director of Swala Safaris.

“As we aim to boost tourism and double the numbers, we recognize the importance of engaging the younger generation and understanding their perspective on tourism. This is crucial for securing the future of tourism in our country,” Sekajja added, expressing gratitude to all the schools that participated in the event.

Among the schools that participated in the event were Kampala Preparatory School, Kampala Parents School, Nicolette Academy, Taibah International School, Quality Primary School, Kampala Junior Academy, and others.

Adding to the vibrant atmosphere, Little Miss Tourism representatives from different parts of Uganda and young beauty queens graced the event, bringing elegance and cultural diversity. Their presence emphasized the role of young people in promoting Uganda’s tourism and preserving its rich heritage.

Amos Wekesa, an authority in Uganda’s tourism sector and Chief Executive Officer at Great Lakes Safaris and Uganda Lodges, delivered an enlightening keynote address, offering insights into the intricacies of the country’s tourism industry to the young participants.

“You should take advantage of your age to do great things, to become ambassadors of your own country. Use your talents in music, dance, poetry, and fashion to showcase the beauty and richness of Uganda. By promoting your country through your art, you not only contribute to its tourism industry but also secure its future prosperity,” Wekesa told the young participants.

Wekesa spoke passionately about the incredible diversity of attractions that Uganda has to offer. He painted a vivid picture of Uganda’s natural wonders, such as the iconic mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, the biodiversity and unique ecosystems of Queen Elizabeth National Park, and the awe-inspiring Murchison Falls. Wekesa also emphasized Uganda’s nickname as the “Pearl of Africa,” highlighting its rich biodiversity, friendly locals, and vibrant culture as factors that set it apart on the global tourism stage.

The Art in Me Festival left a lasting impression, inspiring Uganda’s young people to showcase their country’s beauty and culture through their creativity. The event highlights the vital role of young voices in shaping Uganda’s tourism future.
