“Kifesi” thug who kicked man in city robbery viral video arrested

The Territorial Police at CPS in Kampala have confirmed the arrest of one Derrick Mugisa alias Musota, the third and prime suspect in the aggravated city robbery incident that saw a group of thugs kick out a man in a viral video captured on CCTV cameras.

The victim in the video was later identified as Tomson Mugisha, aged 40, who was robbed of Shs 450,000, a bag containing important documents, keys, and a container during the incident.

The attack according to details in the footage was recorded along Ben Kiwanuka Street at approximately 8 PM on May 22, 2024.

Following the viral video, police said on Thursday that two suspects had been aprehended to aid in the ongoing investigations, and a day later, the third suspect; Musota, was also arrested around Nakivubo Channel in the city centre.

Preliminary investigations pin Musota to be the individual who delivered the deadly ‘upper kick’ that incapacitated Tomson and continued to assault him until he was unconscious.

Within just seconds, other members of the gang are seen immediately rounding up the victim taking off his valuables as the seemingly gang leader kicks him out to unconsciousness.

Police speak out

In a new development following, ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson said, “Mugisa has confessed to both the act of kicking and the robbery.”

“Central Police Station Kampala has successfully apprehended another suspect in connection to the aggravated robbery incident involving Mr Mugisha Tomson, aged 40, which was captured on CCTV,” Mr Owoyesigyire stated in a Friday evening police statement.

“Mugisa Derrick joins two other suspects already in custody: Senyonjo Peter, also known as Kakima, and Nuur Lweyama, also known as Mu TZ (Tanzania). The trio has admitted to acting under the command of another individual, for whom efforts are intensifying to bring to justice,” he added.

The suspects will be processed and presented in court as soon as investigations are complete, according to the law enforcement body.

Police have continuously urged the public to stay vigilant and mindful of their surroundings, saying; “in case of any suspicious activities, please do not hesitate to make an alarm or notify the police immediately. Public cooperation is essential in preventing such incidents and ensuring community safety.”
