USSSA names 66-member athletics squad for FEASSA Games 2026 training camp

The Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) has unveiled a formidable 66-member athletics squad that will enter residential training camp this weekend ahead of the 23rd Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSA) Games, scheduled to take place in Morogoro, Tanzania, from August 12 to 23, 2026.

According to documents seen by Wallnetnews Digital, the provisional squad comprises 33 boys and 33 girls, all selected following their outstanding performances during the USSSA National Ball Games II Athletics Championship held at Sacred Heart Secondary School in Gulu City.

Speaking to Wallnetnews Digital, USSSA Chief Executive Officer Chris Mugisha confirmed that the selected athletes will report to a residential training camp at Kids of Africa, Entebbe, on Saturday, July 25, 2026.

“We are beginning a residential training camp this Saturday at Kids of Africa in Entebbe. The respective schools where the selected athletes come from are already being contacted and official invitation letters are being dispatched. After an intensive training programme, we shall announce the final travelling team about three days before departure for Tanzania,” Mugisha said.

He explained that the residential camp will provide the technical team with an opportunity to assess the athletes’ fitness, discipline and readiness before trimming the squad to the final team that will represent Uganda at the regional championship.

One needs to understand that this year’s FEASSA Games will strictly observe the age eligibility requirements.

For the secondary school category, all athletes must be 19 years or younger, having been born on or after August 22, 2006, while competitors in the primary school category must be under 15 years, having been born on or after August 22, 2009.

It is noteworthy that during last year’s FEASSA Games held in Kakamega, Kenya, Uganda finished second overall in athletics behind hosts Kenya.

Determined to reclaim the regional athletics crown, USSSA has intensified preparations, with officials optimistic that the early residential camp will give Uganda’s athletes a competitive edge.

The association is confident that rigorous preparations, proper technical guidance and exposure will enable the team to challenge for top honours and bring the athletics trophy back to Uganda.

The selected athletes are expected to undergo intensive physical conditioning, technical drills and tactical sessions before the final squad is named for the regional championship.

With residential training set to commence this weekend, attention now shifts to Entebbe, where Uganda’s best young athletes will battle for places on the final national team as the country eyes reclaiming the FEASSA athletics title in Morogoro, Tanzania.
