
UPDF to host RDF for historic friendly Football Match in Ntungamo

The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) 2 Infantry Division will host the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) 5 Infantry Division football team for a landmark friendly football match at Kyamate Playground in Ntungamo Municipality.
This match marks the first-ever sporting event between the two military divisions, signifying a major milestone in regional defense cooperation since the launch of the Proximity Commanders’ engagements.
The visiting RDF delegation will be officially received by Maj Gen Paul Muhanguzi, Commander of the UPDF 2 Infantry Division, along with senior military officials. The football match will be open to the public, highlighting the shared bond between the armed forces and the civilian population.
The event isn’t just about football, it’s a broader demonstration of military diplomacy and people-to-people cooperation. In partnership with local leaders, the UPDF and RDF teams will participate in a route march through Ntungamo Town, Tree planting activities to promote environmental conservation and a blood donation drive to support local health services.
The public is encouraged to participate, reinforcing the military’s commitment to community development and national solidarity.

The match follows a series of cross-border interactions between the UPDF and RDF aimed at enhancing border security, operational coordination, and building mutual trust. These engagements reflect a commitment to confronting shared challenges such as cross-border crime and instability, while also promoting collaboration at the tactical and community levels.
Planned initiatives under the Proximity Commanders’ framework include Joint operations, Coordinated training exercises, Regular meetings between divisional leadership plus Continued sports and cultural exchanges.
These efforts aim to bolster peace and socio-economic transformation in the Uganda-Rwanda border region.
“This football match is more than just a game; it is a visible expression of trust, mutual respect, and the strengthening of ties between our military formations,” a UPDF spokesperson said.
The UPDF 2 Infantry Division extends a warm welcome to the RDF Sports Club, inviting residents of Ntungamo and the surrounding areas to witness and participate in this historic symbol of unity and friendship.
