Police has confirmed that the turn boy of a fuel tanker, which exploded in Kyanamira sub-county, Kabale district along the Mbarara-Kabale highway on Saturday, was burned beyond recognition.
The Nissan semi-trailer fuel tanker, with registration UAQ 912N/SSD 351Y, overturned at Kyanamira corner and subsequently exploded while en route to Kabale town from Kampala. The driver, Geoffrey Onyango, 34, from Eldoret, Kenya, managed to escape but sustained severe burns. He was rushed to Kabale regional referral hospital in critical condition.
The explosion halted traffic for around three hours. According to Elly Maate, Police Spokesperson for the Kigezi region, police found the body of the turn boy, 20-year-old Rogers Onyango, a Kenyan national, inside the vehicle after extinguishing the fire. The remains have been taken to Kabale regional referral hospital for postmortem, as authorities work with Kenyan officials and the family.
This incident follows another recent tragedy on Tuesday, where a fuel tanker from Kampala to Gulu overturned and caught fire in Kigoogwa town, about 22 kilometers from Kampala, resulting in at least 17 fatalities.
