Mbarara High School, popularly known as Chaapa and famous for its slogan “CHAAPA MUST SHINE” and motto “MUGUME N’AMAANI” (Stand Strong/Be Courageous), says it is more than ready to host the 2027 Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) National Boys Football Championship.

The school, whose students and alumni are famously known as The Bulls, is banking on its rich sporting history, established infrastructure, strong alumni network and backing from local government leaders to convince the evaluation committee that Mbarara is the right destination for the prestigious championship.

With USSSA and the Ministry of Education and Sports having completed inspections of institutions that submitted bids to host national school sports competitions in 2027, attention now shifts to the next stage of the selection process.

Speaking to WallNetNews Digital, Mbarara High School Games Teacher Collins Tumukuratire said the school was fully prepared to defend its bid and present a comprehensive PowerPoint presentation outlining its capacity to host the championship when invited before the committee in about two weeks.

Tumukuratire expressed confidence that the school’s preparations, facilities and organisational plans would convince the evaluation team and help secure the hosting rights.

The championship is expected to attract hundreds of schools and thousands of student-athletes, officials, scouts and fans, offering Mbarara City an opportunity to showcase its hospitality while generating business for local service providers.

USSSA launched a countrywide inspection exercise during the week to assess the infrastructure, facilities and organisational capacity of institutions that formally submitted bids to host national school sports competitions in 2027.

The exercise was intended to establish whether prospective hosts meet the requirements for delivering safe, well-organised and competitive championships across more than 30 sporting disciplines, including the highly anticipated National Boys Football Championship.

The inspection team assessed the available facilities and is expected to compile technical reports to guide the selection of successful host schools for the 2027 calendar.

For Mbarara High School, the next stage will provide an opportunity to demonstrate that its facilities, organisational plans and partnerships meet the standards required to stage a national championship.

The school acknowledges that securing the hosting rights requires more than an impressive presentation. Its football pitches must be well-maintained and capable of accommodating an intensive tournament schedule, while other essential arrangements must comply with USSSA’s hosting guidelines.

The bid has also received administrative backing from local government leaders, including Resident District Commissioners (RDCs) and District Education Officers (DEOs), strengthening the school’s case as it seeks to bring the national championship to Mbarara.

Mbarara High School has a long-standing sporting tradition in southwestern Uganda, built on competitive performances in national and regional school championships.

Its sporting identity is closely associated with the brown bull, a symbol reflecting the cattle heritage of the Ankole region. Students and alumni have embraced the identity of The Bulls, while the slogan “CHAAPA MUST SHINE” continues to inspire the school’s sporting ambitions.

The institution is also known for its fierce sporting rivalries, particularly against neighbouring Ntare School, which have helped shape the competitive culture of secondary school sports in the region.

Beyond winning trophies, Mbarara High School regards sports as an essential component of education, using competition to nurture discipline, teamwork, resilience and leadership among learners.

Its philosophy is grounded in holistic development, with the school maintaining that physical fitness and character development are as important as academic achievement.

Through its vibrant sporting culture and range of co-curricular activities, the school seeks to give learners opportunities to discover their talents, compete at different levels and develop the confidence needed to succeed beyond the classroom.

From national trophies to regional titles, the school’s sporting achievements have reinforced the Chaapa identity and its ambition to remain a major force in Uganda’s school sports landscape.

As the 2027 hosting race enters a decisive phase, Mbarara High School hopes its facilities, administrative support and sporting heritage will convince the USSSA evaluation committee that it is ready to deliver a successful National Boys Football Championship.

For The Bulls, securing the hosting rights would be more than an opportunity to welcome the country’s best school football teams to Mbarara. It would also be a chance to demonstrate the school’s commitment to sports development, talent identification and the growth of school football in Uganda.

With its rallying calls of “CHAAPA MUST SHINE” and “MUGUME N’AMAANI,” Mbarara High School is now preparing to make its case as it seeks to turn its hosting ambition into reality.
