KITEEZI TRAGEDY: KCCA sets up public emergency response desk to support victims

Kampala – Currently, the number of people that are being taken care of after the tragic incident at Kiteezi landfill is increasing day by day. Apparently, over 170 people are being handled by authorities at the nearby emergency response centre located at Kiteezi Church of Uganda primary school.

Information obtained by this publication indicates that the number started very small with about 35 people, but it has ever since increased.

From this development, Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), has since allocated a special desk to the general public where they can generate or channel support and contribution to the affected persons especially to the ones who are currently being handled at the emergency facility.

The emergency office has been commissioned at City Hall codenamed Kiteezi Emergency Response Desk (KERD) From the circular sense by this publication KCCA’s Ms. Scovia Namasope has been directed to handle all the support and contribution on the Desk contact number O776358141.

We have also been informed that some contributions in form of financial support and items have so far been received from various well wishers

Among these include; Apostle Henry Byamukama of Faith Life Church Ministries who donated a total of 150 blankets, a bull, 100kgs of beans, 91 bags of maize flour, 40 chicken, diapers, and pads. Mr Godfrey Muhirwe also donated 263 pieces of bed sheets, Kampala Institute of Allied Health also managed to supply the facility with Soap & sugar, St. Balikudembe Market Vendors (Owino) donated the facility foodstuffs & clothes, Nakasero Market vendors donated foodstuffs & clothes.

While Khalid Ssimbwa donated 1,000kgs of rice, water, 100kgs beans, and maize flour (worthy of Shs7,200,000/=), Aunt Porridge brought composite flour (100 pieces), Fred Mutyaba donated 50 bars of soap and 50kgs of Maize flour.

Dorcus Bashebwa (Mama D Restaurant) with buckets, pads, soap and hot meals and also Fatumah Nakiito donated some baby clothes & money.

Speaking with our reporter, KCCA Executive Director Ms Dorothy Kisaka appreciated the move by some of the individuals for their heartily contribution.

She added that the Authority is highly grateful for those who have already given both financial and material support.

Kisaka also condoled with families who lost their loved ones in the incident. “We are deeply saddened by the loss of lives in Kiteezi and we continue to send out heartfelt condolences to the bereaved and the suffering because of the devastating effects of the garbage slide that took place on Saturday 10th August 2024,” Kisaka said.

It can be noted that the government has since Saturday been responding to the immediate needs, and KCCA conveyed many votes of appreciation for this support from various ministry departments and agencies who have supported the response.
