It was a tough day for Lugazi FC as Kitara FC, the reigning Stanbic Uganda Cup holders, cruised to a 3-0 victory in the 2024/25 StarTimes Uganda Premier League season opener.
The match, held at Lugazi Stadium in Najjembe, saw Kitara dominate with goals from Frank Tumwesigye in the 24th minute and a brace from Jude Ssemugabi, who scored in the 42nd and 64th minutes.
Coming off a strong season where they finished fourth in the league and clinched the Stanbic Uganda Cup, Brian Ssenyondo’s Kitara FC started their new campaign in style.
This win was particularly significant as it marked their first victory at Najjembe, which was seen as a crucial result in setting the tone for the season.
The encounter between Lugazi and Kitara was highly anticipated, as the two sides met for the third time in competitive matches. Last season, they faced each other in the 2022-2023 FUFA Big League, with Kitara winning both ties 0-3 and 1-0 at Lugazi and Kigaaya playgrounds, respectively.
In an interview with Wallnetnews, Brian Ssenyondo, head coach of Kitara FC, expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance.
“It was important to start the season with a win, especially away from home. The players executed the game plan well, and I am pleased with their overall performance. This result gives us the momentum we need to push forward in the league,” Ssenyondo remarked.
Jude Ssemugabi, who netted two goals in the match, also shared his thoughts with Wallnetnews.
“Scoring two goals today was an amazing feeling, and it really boosted my confidence. My recent debut goal for the Uganda Cranes definitely motivated me to keep pushing, and I’m glad I could contribute to the team’s success today.”Jude Ssemugabi said.
Kitara FC’s victory against Lugazi FC has set the stage for what could be another impressive season for the Stanbic Uganda Cup holders. With their sights set on continued success, Ssenyondo’s side will be a team to watch as the StarTimes Uganda Premier League progresses.
