The Kids of Africa Run is set to return for its 10th edition on September 8th, 2024, with a renewed focus on raising awareness about menstrual health and empowering girls to stay in school. The event, held at Kids Pioneer School in Entebbe, was officially announced on Tuesday, August 27th 2024  at the Sheraton Kampala Hotel.

This milestone edition marks another collaboration between I&M Bank Uganda and Kids of Africa, continuing a decade-long partnership. Participants in this year’s run can choose from 5km, 10km, and 21km categories, with top performers in each category receiving prizes. Building on their sponsorship from 2022, I&M Bank has significantly increased its support for the event, contributing UGX 5 million towards the cause.

The bank has also pledged substantial participation from its staff and has committed to ongoing support for future editions of the run. “We at I&M Bank are proud to once again support the Kids of Africa Run,” said Racheal Kulanyi, the bank’s Communications and Outreach Officer. “We’re even more thrilled to be backing such a vital cause: improving access to reusable sanitary pads and ensuring girls can stay in school. Our participation reflects our dedication to giving back to the community and promoting gender equality. By joining the run and raising awareness, we hope to contribute to meaningful change and inspire others to take action as well.”

Each year, the proceeds from the run are dedicated to a specific sanitation project within the local community. This year, the focus is on creating awareness about reusable sanitary pads to help keep girls in school. Funds raised will be directed to Days for Girls, an NGO that works to eliminate the stigma and barriers associated with menstruation.

“This event goes beyond just fundraising; it’s a step towards a brighter future for countless young girls,” said Esbern Budolfsen, the Deputy National Director of Kids of Africa. “By highlighting reusable sanitary pads, we’re addressing a barrier that hinders girls from staying in school and reaching their full potential.

Our goal is to create lasting change and ensure every girl has the opportunity to succeed. Together, we can make a difference in their lives and contribute to the broader fight for gender equality.”

Budolfsen, who also serves as the course director, praised Ugandans for embracing runs with a purpose. “This culture is fantastic, and of course, we encourage everyone to participate in this event. This year, we anticipate over 1,000 runners to take part. The track is ready and in excellent condition for the race.”

Registration for the run is priced at UGX 25,000 per person, with participants able to register at various locations, including Kids of Africa in Bwerenga village, Entebbe, Total Namasuba 2 (Entebbe Road), Katabi Town Council Mayor’s Office, Divine Saloon at the Madison Building in Kawuku, and Abayita Ababiri branches.

Adding to the excitement, this year’s run will conclude with performances by top DJs and a headline act by music sensation Azawi. Last year’s edition saw approximately 1,000 participants, with proceeds used to construct modern toilets at Kitala Primary School and St. Paul Bulaga Primary School in Katabi Town Council, Wakiso District.

As the event approaches, the organizers and supporters alike are gearing up for another successful edition that not only promotes fitness but also champions a critical cause in the community.
