As the 21st edition of the Federation of East Africa Secondary School Sports Association (FEASSA) Games approaches, host and debutant Amus College School is setting its sights high, hoping to make it to the finals in the boys’ Basketball 5×5 category.

Amus College School will tip-off their campaign against Agoro Sare High School of Kenya at 2:00 PM on Court A, the home court of Amus College School, on Monday, August 19th, 2024.

Despite being newcomers to the competition, Amus College School is more than determined to take every match as a final. Their goal is clear: to become the first host to win the Basketball trophy. The team is leaving no stone unturned in their preparation, driven by the ambition to make history on their home court.

Calvin Opio, the games teacher at Amus College School, expressed the team’s strategy and aspirations after a morning training session. “We are going to use the championship to gain experience, but with the aim of reaching the finals. We intend to take one game at a time and hopefully achieve our goal,” Opio told Wallnetnews.

Basketball has not traditionally been a popular sport in the Teso zone, with only a few schools like Teso College-Aloet and Ngora High School having established programs.

However, the emergence of Amus College School in basketball has sparked newfound interest in the sport across the region. According to a survey conducted by Wallnetnews, schools in districts such as Serere, Kumi, Amuria, and Soroti have shown increased enthusiasm for basketball. This growing interest suggests that next year’s qualifiers could be highly competitive.

Amus College School faces a tough challenge in their first match against Agoro Sare High School, who finished second in April’s KSSSA National First Term Games Championships held in Machakos. Agoro Sare narrowly missed out on the national title, losing 56-54 to Dr. Aggrey. This makes them formidable opponents for the hosts.

Amus College School is drawn in a challenging Group A, which includes, Agoro Sare High School (Kenya), ITS Gasogi (Rwanda), Hope Secondary and International Technical School Gasogi (Rwanda)

Group B, meanwhile, features, Kenyan national champions Dr. Aggrey, Laiser Hill Academy (Kenya), Juhudi Secondary School (Tanzania), Janan School (Uganda) and Uganda’s defending champions Buddo

Amus College School, despite being a debutant, is approaching the FEASSA Games with determination and a strategic mindset. With the support of their home crowd and a clear goal in sight, they are poised to make a significant impact in the Basketball 5×5 category.

As they face off against tough opponents like Agoro Sare High School, the stage is set for an exciting and potentially historic tournament for Amus College School. The team’s journey will be one to watch as they strive to break new ground in Teso zone basketball.
