KAMPALA, Uganda -Hon. Brig. Flavia Byekwaso announced today, Wednesday October 9th 2024 her withdrawal from the race for President of the Uganda Netball Federation (UNF), now called Netball Uganda.

This decision, she said, was difficult but necessary due to concerns over “bias, procedural impropriety, and glaring irregularities” in the election process.

In a press statement, Byekwaso outlined five key reasons behind her decision. She highlighted management and accountability issues dating back to April 2023, when the Ministry of Education instructed the National Council of Sports (NCS) to withdraw the UNF’s Certificate of Recognition if its leadership did not adhere to restructuring guidelines.

Consequently, the NCS revoked the certificate, though it did not formally dissolve the federation.

To manage the federation’s day-to-day operations and prepare for upcoming elections, a normalization committee—endorsed by World Netball—was appointed.

However, Byekwaso criticized the committee, led by Mr. Moses Mwase, for overstepping its mandate, stating that it has contributed to further confusion within the organization.

“For the reasons above, among others, I have found it safer to stay away from the mismanagement by the Netball Normalization Committee that continues to unfold,” Byekwaso explained.

She also expressed gratitude to her supporters, volunteers, and staff, acknowledging their tireless efforts and commitment. “As a dedicated lover and promoter of the netball sport, I have always put the needs of the sport before my own,” she added.

In interviews with Wallnet News following Byekwaso’s announcement, several stakeholders expressed disappointment over her decision, voicing concerns about the lack of transparency they perceive within the normalization committee. One delegate said,

“We are saddened that Hon. Byekwaso is stepping down. She has been a voice for change, and without her, it feels like we are back to square one.”

Others emphasized the need for the Ugandan government and Parliament to take action to restore integrity within the federation’s leadership. A representative from a regional netball association remarked,

“It is time for our leaders to ensure that all governing bodies in sports uphold the values of transparency and accountability. We hope Parliament can take a closer look at what is happening and push for reforms where necessary.”

Byekwaso’s withdrawal leaves questions about the future leadership of Netball Uganda, and whether the current processes can ensure a fair and transparent election on October 26, 2024.

The call for government and Parliamentary intervention reflects growing frustration among netball stakeholders who seek a leadership structure committed to good governance and the advancement of netball in Uganda.
