NWSC Senior Director, Dr. Rose Christine Kaggwa elected Senior Vice President, International Water Association (IWA)

At its Annual General Meeting in Toronto, Canada, the International Water Association (IWA) elected Dr. Rose Christine Kaggwa, NWSC’s Senior Director of Business and Scientific Services, as its Senior Vice President for the 2024-2026 term.

Her election bridges the gap between water and sanitation stakeholders in Low- and Middle-Income Countries and the global community. Dr. Kaggwa secured 41 out of the 63 votes cast by the governing country members.

NWSC Managing Director, Dr. Eng Silver Mugisha, expressed pride in her appointment, stating that it ensures the interests of Africa, particularly NWSC, and other low-income countries are well represented. Dr. Kaggwa, an IWA fellow, thanked the Governing Members for their confidence in her leadership.

Who is Dr. Rose Kaggwa?

Dr. Rose Christine Kaggwa holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Resources Management from IHE Delft, Institute for Water Education in the Netherlands.

With 32 years of experience in the water and sanitation sector, she has held various management positions at Uganda’s National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC), where she currently serves as the Senior Director for Business and Scientific Services. In this role, she oversees Water Quality Management, Training and Capacity Development, Research and Development, and leads the NWSC Consultancy arm, which she has managed since 2006.

Dr. Kaggwa has played a key role in implementing numerous performance improvement strategies within NWSC at both managerial and supervisory levels.

Her work extends beyond Uganda, as she has established partnerships in countries such as Bangladesh, Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Sudan, Trinidad and Tobago, India, and Zambia. Additionally, she has served as the Second President of the African Water Association (AfWASA) Scientific and Technical Committee since 2018.

Dr. Rose Christine Kaggwa is deeply passionate about capacity development and advocating for the increased representation of women in the water and sanitation sector.

In recognition of her contributions, she received the IWA Women in Water Award in 2016 during the IWA World Congress and Exhibition in Brisbane, Australia, along with other international honors, including the Woman in Power and Water Award in 2017. Dr. Kaggwa has also served as a member of the IWA Board from 2021 to 2024.
