Traffic police have arrested 92 motorists suspected of drink-driving during a night operation conducted across five areas within the Kampala Metropolitan Police region on Friday, October 23, 2026.
The operation, led by the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety in collaboration with Kampala Metropolitan Police, aimed at curbing drink-driving and reducing road crashes.
According to police, Kira Road registered 15 arrests, Kabalagala 16, Jinja Road 20, Kawempe 18 and Katwe 23, bringing the total number of suspects arrested to 92.
The crackdown was conducted during the weekend, a period police consider particularly risky due to increased social activities and alcohol consumption.
Authorities said the high number of arrests recorded in a single night highlights the persistent challenge of drink-driving in the metropolitan area. Police also pointed to road crash statistics indicating that weekends account for more fatalities than other days of the week.
Traffic police have cautioned motorists against driving after consuming alcohol, urging them to observe traffic regulations and prioritise the safety of other road users.
“If you drink, do not drive. If you drive, do not drink,” said SP Michael Kananura, the traffic police spokesperson.
Kananura called on motorists to make responsible decisions and comply with traffic laws, emphasising that collective efforts are essential in preventing road crashes and saving lives.
