Thousands of Ugandans are victims of Unsafe Medication-NDA

By Our Reporter
The National Drug Authority (NDA) has said that thousands of Ugandans are victims of unsafe medication.

The Authority revealed that the number of patients of this nature are drastically increasing.

Dr. Hellen Ndaji, the Director in charge of drug safety at NDA said that in the last half decade, over ten thousand patients experienced varying effects after medication of such type.

She says they are not taking this lightly, explaining that the authority is taking some strides to ensure that they minimize the medication errors made by health workers as well as people who are taking drugs without health workers’ directions.

“One of the factors contributing to the rise of these cases is self-medication by various individuals,” she stated.

It should be remembered that the 72nd World Health Assembly held in May 2019 in Geneva of Switzerland adopted a resolution calling for global action on patient safety, urging member states to prioritize patient safety in health care policies and programs.

In relation to the latter, on the 24th of November 2021, the Ministry of Health (MoH) in Uganda and JICA officially launched “Project on Patient Safety Establishment through the 5S-CQI-TQM Project” at the 8th Annual National Health Care Quality Improvement Conference.

Today the 15th of September 2022 Uganda joined the rest of the world to commemorate World Patient Safety day.
