NEW TWIST! UMEME says Yaka meter phaseout is for the global upgrade standards

Whereas the Ministry of Energy through it’s political head the Hon. Ruth Nankabirwa on Friday informed Uganda electricity users that electric billing through Yaka will soon be phased out, and that all prepaid electricity users are required to migrate to the new Token Identification System (TID Rollover) by October 2024.

Energy Minister Ruth Nankabirwa revealed this decision during a press conference at the Uganda Media Centre. “The transition to the TID Rollover system implies a departure from the current Token Identifiers (TID)” she stated.

However, the Minister’s statements seems to have take some Ugandas by suprise and others expressing exciting sentiment, this not right according to UMEME the body responsible for distribution and regulating electricity in Uganda

In a press release on Saturday evening, Umeme informs it’s esteemed customers of the commencement of the Yaka Meters upgrade project to meet the global metering standards and deadline of November 2024.

They added that the process of upgrading the software of the Yaka meter to ensure compatibility with the latest vending system. “This will improve the customer vending experience, enhance system security and electricity token recognition” reads in the statement.

They explained that, a dual rollout strategy is being implemented by; Umeme staff or customer self-service rollovers. Adding that the project will be implemented in an area/district-based approach to minimize service interruptions. “Customers shall be adequately informed in time” Umeme added.

According to the body, the information about upgrade will be decimated to their customers in scheduled for the upgrade through SMS, 3 tokens adding that it will be key in the Yaka meter in the order they are received. “An upgrade confirmation message shall be displayed once the Token loading is successful” said in statement.

They reassured their customers and stakeholders of this plans to ensure the completion of the project on time and a seamless experience in the upgrade process.
