ARUA. The Mufti of Uganda, Sheikh Alhaji Shaban Ramadhan Mubajje has officially launched a multi-billion Irshad Mosque and commercial complex project in Arua city.

Mubajje launched the construction works with a fundraising drive that show hundreds of believers extend financial support in cash and pledges towards the success of the project at Irshad mosque in Arua city on Friday.

According to Sheikh Shaban Abu Jaffar Karala, the Arua Muslim District Khadi, the bill of quantity (BOQ) for the construction of the proposed modern mosque is shs700m while the commercial complex is estimated to cost a whopping shs1.5bn.

Abu said the intention of constructing the modern mosque is to measure to the standard of a city while the commercial complex lock-ups will help in generating revenue for the mosque.

It is for this reason that Mubajje launched the works by pledging material support worth shs10m and advised the construction committee to think of redesigning the project plan to increase the number of lock-ups from the initial 28 to about 100 shops so as to generate more revenue.

“If we had a basement here for parking, we could park 100 cars down. Then make the first ground floor which could be 50 shops, this is the minimum, the whole ground floor with passages. With the estimated shs2m rental fee per month, that is shs100m. The second floor could also be the same 50 shops at shs1m per month which is shs50m, then the parking down of 100 cars which can generate shs6m per month, all totaling to shs156m in a month. Then on top there, put a very big mosque with some offices beside it,” Mubajje said.

“You could be earning that shs156m and a conference center could be there on top. Make use of this place. Now you are happy because you are going to get the shs150m, so this is for the construction team to think about. Let us make use of this place lest it is going to be wasted because you can go up. A mosque can be on the second or third floor like Old Kampala. You just climb to go and pray but down there are offices though here you can make shops with passages so that it is a whole shopping arcade beneath and a parking area down. So, that one is food for thought,” Mubajje advised.

However, Mubajje said he strongly supports the idea of developing the area and that he will fully be behind the team spearheading the project to ensure that it succeeds.

Similarly, Abbas Muluubya, the Secretary General of Uganda Muslim Supreme Council said the project that they have come to launch is a step in the right direction.

“It is something we would like to see everywhere and that is the secret of unity,” Muluubya remarked.

The launch attracted several dignitaries including Arua city officials and the business community who equally extended support towards the project.

Notably among others, Jackson Atima Lee Buti, the Arua Central Division Member of Parliament (MP) extended cash support of shs1m and pledged shs40m towards the project, a renowned businessman identified as Ashraf Moshen pledged material support worth shs40m, Ham Ezama, the Arua Deputy Resident City Commissioner in charge of the Central Division made a pledge of shs5m and Dr. Ronald Debo, the Uganda National Chamber of Commerce and Industry Arua branch chairperson gave shs2m in cash and made other commitments which will be fulfilled in the due course of the construction works.

Al-Hajj Isa Afeku Kato, a member of the construction committee noted that the one-year project is expected to be completed in April next year.
