MP Osoru empowers village SACCOS with cash, registers tremendous success

ARUA. Mourine Osoru, the Arua city woman Member of Parliament (MP) is at it again!

From donating Ambulances, sewing machines and promoting making of crafts for income generation among the youths, Osoru has this time round, resorted to empowering her voters economically with cash in each cell.

According to Osoru, the strategy of empowering the village savings and credit cooperatives (SACCOS) with cash has registered tremendous success across the city.

“The initiative I have taken to support women in every cell in Arua city has really made a very tremendous success by going beyond imaginations. Yesterday (Friday) we celebrated women’s day and one of the cells as confirmed by the LCI chairperson, the women have contributed money now almost to the tune of shs4m. That is my own initiative that I started with shs200,000 per cell,” Osoru told journalists in Arua city on Saturday March 9, 2024.

She noted that some cells have already saved money to the tune of shs5m to shs7m depending on their capacity.

“Now I’m very excited because what I started, the idea that we gave them is working very well. Indeed, they listened to my idea carefully. We started by giving them some small seed money of shs200,000 per cell which has now caused a lot of impact in all the cells. As a result, the women are very happy, they are telling me that they can now at least support their families, they don’t go anyhow to look for loans from commercial banks like they used to do apart from getting some soft loans within their cells,” Osoru said.

Osoru, however, observed that the challenge she has realized is in the 469 cells in Arua city, there are only two villages that politically didn’t put their money in good use.

But Osoru said despite the challenge, she is much prepared to go for the second phase of supporting the village SACCOS.

“In the second phase, we are going to visit all the cells and where we see that a cell has not done well, we shall continue to encourage them, talk to them and give them some additional seed money on condition that they are able to improve in order to support their families,” Osoru remarked.

She said the idea of supporting village SACCOS started last year in Ayivu division and now it is being implemented in Arua central division.

Martha Onyiru Geria, a resident of Congo cell in Arua central division thanked God for MP Osoru’s initiative which she said has saved them from the loans they used to pick from commercial banks with high interest rates.

Irene Ogwaru another resident said the program which MP Osoru has come up with has made them learn that even without any other support, they can be able to save their own money and rely on it when it comes to borrowing.

“Through her teaching, we have learnt that any shs1,000 or shs2,000 we save every day on top of what she has given can help us in borrowing to support our businesses and families at the end of the month or year. So, I thank Hon Osoru for really coming to save us from the financial stress we have been going through,” Ogwaru said.
