No more worries from the Patients after Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital  Laboratory has been internationally accredited by SANAS (South Africa National Accreditation System)
after a long delay.
Dr. Celestine Barigye, the Executive Director Mbarara Referral Hospital has described this Certificate as a big achievement which the facility has acquired that meets international standards. He said that the Laboratory at Mbarara Hospital is accredited to the international standards. This has passed through highest tests of quality competence by SANAS which means that the test results from this Hospital cannot be doubted anywhere in the world. He added that it gives assurance to the clients that results from tests are trusted.
Dr. Nicolus one of the Lab Technicians at MRRH
Barigye reveals that the accreditation status means the institution has quality systems in Place. It was also revealed that the journey of getting this Certificate started way back in 2013 with support from East Africa Public Health Laboratory Networking Project.
The Hospital has already been accredited locally by Uganda National Accreditation Systems (UGANAS and needed to aim higher for an international certificate as a way of ensuring that there are services that match international standards.
Apparently, the Laboratory at Mbarara Referral Hospital is able to do medical tests that include; haematology, molecular Biology, bacteriology and mycobacteriology.
According to Dr. Robert Wagubi, Mbarara Regional Referral  Hospital Laboratory Manager said that the Hospital got up to date machines that have been supplied by the Government of Uganda and that these machines are in different sections.
“We have machines that are able to do 16 samples of TB and within 40 minutes they will have given you the results. We have hematology machines that are able to give you results within  two minutes, meaning in an hour you have 30 patients for a CBC being worked on. We have the best blood culture machine and they are only four in Uganda  and we are privileged that Mbarara has one of them”
According to Wagubi, MRRH is the first facility to get international accreditation in Ankore Region.
He added that according to the  standards you cannot be accredited when the Lab is just in a single room. That this accreditation was delayed because the hospital did not have enough structures until when the Hospital Director worked hard and put some new structures enough to accomodate the standard of the laboratory.
