The Office of the Resident City Commissioner Mbarara City has started investigations in which about 110M is suspected to have been swindled by some Leaders within  Mbarara Central  Market which include the President’s Initiative money.
According to sources, it is alleged that the previous leadership of this market  headed by Mohammad Nyombi who was at the same time the Chairman of Mbarara Central Market Vendors SACCO connived with some officials at Mbarara City Council and swindled Vendors money. Complaints were raised several times until it was reported to the office of the RCC. Col. James Mwesigye who has constituted a committee that will investigate this matter.
Vendors accuse the previous  regime as they demand for an audit and accountability for their money in this SACCO but all is still in vain. Nyombi had not handed over the office of the SACCO since he left the office of market chairmanship, this is until recently when they elected new leadership of the SACCO which the Vendors claim that the election was held illegally.
Mbarara Central Market Vendors SACCO was established in 2010 during the regime of Nyombi. A group of Vendors subscribed to this SACCO for savings and for loan services. When the market was allocated from independence park back to the new constructed facility, the leadership of  Nyombi was interdicted by Minister of Local Government Raphael Magyezi.
In the same way, the SACCO was also halted from operating until recently when it resumed. In November  at the handover ceremony of the market Leadership, Nyombi was able to handover all the properties of the market to Emmanuel Muhumuza the current market Chairman besides the SACCO properties. At the same function, Muhumuza asked Nyombi in front of Mbarara City Leadership  to also hand over the SACCO Office but Nyombi rejected the request that he had to first sort some issues within the SACCO.
last week a group of Vendors led by the current chairman Emannuel Muhumuza petitioned the office of the RCC challenging the election of the new leadership of the market SACCO claiming that the election was held illegally and people that were elected were selected by Nyombi the former chairman of this SACCO.
Speaking to wallnetnews Website, Muhumuza revealed that as the leadership of this market they are challenging the new elected leaders of the SACCO on the fact that the election was held illegally. They also reported that there must be accountability to prevail and an audit should be made before Chairman Nyombi hands over this office of the SACCO.  He revealed that a lot of money from this SACCO was misused.
“As members of this SACCO, We received money from the president of Uganda of about 60m, we also received 10m from MP Robert Rukaari and 10m from the former MP Micheal Tusiime but above all this money as members of the SACCO we have never benefited from it, we don’t know how this money was used. To our surprise we have also established that the Central market received about 30m for Emyoga but I must report to you that we don’t know where this money went. That’s why we are saying that Nyombi and his leadership must account for all this money before he hands over the SACCO to any other person” said Muhumazi, the current Chairman of Central Market.
When this petition reached the RCC Mwesigye, he immediately constituted a committee composed of the Deputy RCC Mbarara City South, CID, DISO and the Commercial Officer Mbarara City to investigate and come up with a comprehensive report about the money said to have been swindled from the Vendors SACCO. RCC says that the process of election for the SACCO leadership was intended to cover up the old leadership of Nyombi who are accused of fraud.
Mwesigye revealed that when it is found that Nyombi and his committee misused money for the SACCO they will have to be arrested. In one week, this committee is supposed to produce a report about the SACCO money.
According to Nyombi, he said some leaders in the market are just playing their politics in the SACCO matters. That the issue of accusing him and his Leadership that they swindled SACCO money are just allegations. He confessed that they received money from the president but this is the money that started this SACCO.
“As leaders we didn’t ask for Emyoga money. And as Leaders who ran this SACCO for some good time we have all the records and audits of 2022 showing how we have been using all the money that we received” said Nyombi.
