Police in Mbarara have arrested a 38 year old man, Nelson Byarugaba a resident of Lyantonde who is said to have been conning people through impersonation of Mbarara City Mayor Robert Mugabe Kakyebezi.
Byarugaba was arrested by the Mbarara Central Police station through tracking. The suspect has been charged with the case of impersonation. It is alleged that Byarugaba has been using various telephone lines to call Kakyebezi’s colleagues and friends asking them for money. That he has extorted money from some people calling himself Robert Kakyebezi the Mayor of Mbarara City.
Byarugaba told police that he has practiced this kind of business for about three years. He confirmed that he has conned more than 20 people using Mayor Kakyebezi’s names. He said that he extorted millions of money from the people he conned but he didn’t reveal the exact amount of money he had collected from victims.
Among the people that Byarugaba tried to con include the deputy Lord Mayor for Kampala Doreen Nyanjura whom he didn’t manage to get any coin from her.
Others include the Mayors of Busia, the RDC of Fort Portal and other Mayors from different towns in this country and other close friends to Kakyebezi.  Kakyebezi revealed that there is a man from Isingiro who was extorted about 500,000= and one from Ssembabure who was extorted about 800,000=.
The suspect has used his tactics to persuade the victims that Mbarara City Council has got some jobs that need applicants and  that if they can pay some money, their relatives can easily get those positions in Mbarara City Council. Such approaches convinced some of the victims to pay the bribe but after the payment the suspect would immediately switch off the phones and switch to another line which would not be easily tracked by the victims.
His trail came up after several complaints from the people who were conned by the suspect. They raised their complaints directly to Mayor Kakyebezi that they were asked to pay bribes for jobs in the City Council. This prompted Mayor Kakyebezi to report to police about someone using his name to extort money from people. Police followed the matter until Yesterday Wednesday evening when this goon was arrested.
According to Mayor Kakyebezi, the suspect used his name through impersonation and called some important persons in this country lying to them that they should pay some money for the jobs of their relatives or friends.
He would tell them that Mbarara City Council has some jobs in the Engineering department, accounts and other departments. Then he would ask them to pay so that as a mayor, he will assist to ensure their people are given those positions.
The suspect used a telephone number of 0772808631 in the names of a lady called Rose Tushabe.
“I received a number of complaints from different people who are my colleagues and friends that I have some jobs that I promised them not knowing that there was someone who was using my name to con them. when it became too much I had to report to the police. I want to call on the public that conmen are becoming a very serious issue, so you must be extra careful. Children are going back to school so parents beware. Such kind of people like Byarugaba are going to con you. I also ask those who were conned on behalf of my name to come to the police and make statements against this suspect. This man has totally extorted my name so let him face the law” Mayor Mbarara City.
One Bruce Arinda from Mitooma but staying in Mbarara City was conned about 350,000= .
Samson Kasasira confirmed that Byarugaba is already in custody on charges of impersonation. He urged the pubic to avoid such people who come in the line of fake jobs.
He added that Government jobs are advertised through media so no one should be persuaded like how others have been conned by Byarugaba.
He appealed to the victims to come to the police and make statements so that police can get where to start its investigation into the matter.
