Gunned down: UPDF Officer shot dead by a rogue Police officer over women

L/CPL Yeremiah Paper, a UPDF Officer attached to Ruhengyere Engineering Brigade Kiruhura District was shot dead by a policeman NO.50158 PC Opio Charles attached to FFU Mbarara.

This incident occurred on Friday evening at about 6:00pm 19/05/2023 at Police/ Prison Cell at the residence of FFU opposite bank of Uganda Mbarara branch.

According to ASP Emmanuel Bwambale, the Mbarara DPC/ CPC, shooting was led by misunderstandings between  the deceased one L/CPL  YEREMIAH, a UPDF Officer and the Policeman PC Opio.

However, an eye witness who is a boda boda Cyclist testified that by the time of shooting, he was at the scene. That the cause of the shooting originated from two girls who were taking photos with the UPDF Officer (Yeremiah, the Deceased).

He said that while the trio was taking photos using the phone ( selfie) they incidentally captured the policeman (Opio) who was not interested to be part of their selfie photos.

Opio immediately reacted accusing the trio of involving him in their selfie photos.  unfortunately under the influence of a woman, the updf soldier, Yeremiah rudely replied to him saying he was “stupid”.

It seems the statement from Yeremiah were something that left Opio uncomfortable. According to the Eye witness, after a bit of exchange between the two security officers, Opio took off and  left the trio in their leisure, in return he came in a full combat and asked again why the gentleman and the two ladies were involving him in their selfies, and if its true he was stupid as alleged by the soldier.

In response from  Yeremiah, the UPDF  Officer said “Yes even if we involve you in our selfies what will you do”, little did he know they were his last words on this earth. It was  at this point when Opio held his gun and shot rapidly at Yeremiah leaving everybody else terrified.

According to sources, the UPDF Officer L/PL Yeremiah in casual wear  had come to visit his brother at the residence of the FFU (FFU Staff Quarters).

This is when a group of other policemen and some girls joined them for some booze near the residence and Opio was part of them. After  sometime, it is alleged that disagreements came up over the girls and conflict of interest was involved. Selfies started which resulted into shootings.

After the incident the suspect took himself to Mbarara Central Police Station where he was arrested and put in Police Custody, and the gun exhibited.

The body of the deceased was taken to the Regional Referral Hospital Mbarara for postmortem.

This is the 9th shooting ever since the shooting of Charles Engola, who was the minister for labour.
