ARUA. The Presidential Advisor on Special Operations, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba is slated to preside over the South Sudanese cultural Gala and exhibition slated to take place in Arua city on Saturday January 27, 2024.

This was revealed by Gabriel Modi Batali, the overall coordinator of South Sudanese Refugees Association (SSURA), a registered community-based organization organizing the gala.

“We chose the son of the President of Uganda (Gen. Muhoozi) to be our Guest of Honor because he is a vibrant person and because he is having another vision in this country. So, we needed to bring him because he is neutral. If we were to bring people from South Sudan, it will be political,” Batali said.

Batali joins Ichogor and other leaders in sweeping RCC’s office premises to launch the pre NRM Day activities on Wednesday

Speaking on the sidelines of the pre NRM Day (January 26) anniversary launch of activities in Arua city on Wednesday January 24, 2024, Batali noted that the cultural gala is aimed at bringing South Sudanese living in Uganda together.

“As you know, the politics of the country (South Sudan) has caused a lot of divisions among the people back home and those living elsewhere. It became a problem for people to live together. But through this gala, we are managing to bring the different communities together. For example, in our preparatory meetings, we managed to fully involve the chairman of the Dinka community and the chairman of the Nuer community to bring all their colleagues together on that day,” Batali said.

“We are not part of the politics in South Sudan, we are now refugees here and this is a gala we are supposed to support together with the locals and authorities in West Nile. That is why this cultural gala is formed to bring all the Sudanese together and I know this is the beginning of the unity of the people of South Sudan living here,” Batali emphasized.

According to Batali, in the recent census which was done in May 2023, there are about 32,000 South Sudanese urban refugees living in Arua city and Koboko Municipality.

But he said they are expecting over 10,000 South Sudanese in West Nile including those from Bweyale in Kiryadongo district, DR Congo and South Sudan to attend the occasion.

Santo Lasuba, the chairperson organizing committee of the upcoming South Sudanese Cultural gala said they are hopeful that the gala will bring them together to showcase the culture of their different traditions.

“The objective of the gala is that we want to have a peaceful coexistence among ourselves and also to start a new life so as to forget that war trauma we came with. Then we have to start from here by coming together to celebrate and enjoy the different activities together,” Lasuba said.

Charles Ichogor, the Arua Resident City Commissioner (RCC) observed that one of the core values of NRM is Pan Africanism and that is why in Arua city they have about 23,000 urban refugees.

“And because of that integration, the Sudanese refugees have organized a cultural gala on Saturday after the NRM celebrations. I would like to invite people to join our brothers and sisters in the spirit of Pan Africanism and we are going to make sure that security is heightened because we expect officers from South Sudan to come. That is a colorful ceremony for us the people in West Nile to join our brothers and sisters so that together we can share quite a number of things,” Ichogor appealed.
