Football will take the biggest chunk of the government subvention release to sports federations/associations/unions for the financial year 2022-2023 totalling to 35.9 Billion Uganda Shillings.

Out of the 35.9 Billion Uganda Shillings allocated to the 52 local sports governing bodies, football which is governed by Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) takes a lion’s share of 17 Billion which is 47.3 % of the total subvention.

This development was confirmed by a letter from Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development (dated 20th October 2022) and it was addressed to the concerned beneficiaries of the Parliamentary Sports Budget Appropriation 2022/2023.

The next biggest beneficiaries are Athletics, Boxing and Netball who have been allocated 3 Billion Shillings each totalling up to 8.3 % of the total money.

Cricket, Rugby, Basketball, Paralympics and Motorsport will each receive 1.2 Billion which is 3.3 % of the total subvention.

The other direct beneficiaries are; Badminton, Chess, Cycling, Golf, Squash, Swimming, Handball, Hockey, Kickboxing, Pool table, Table tennis, Lawn tennis, University sports, Volleyball and Woodball who will each receive 0.2 Billion which is 0.5 % of the total fund.

All other remaining federations/associations will share 900 Million which is 2.5 =% of the fund.

With the money released, the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development states that the onus is on National Council of Sports (NCS) to distribute the funds across the federations/associations/unions under the subvention release but as guided by parliament.

Government subvention release to sports federations/associations/unions is done quarterly depending on the availability of funds at the Ministry of Finance.
