Court to deliver Judgement in Maria Nagirinya Murder Case
Court is set to deliver judgment in the case where six people are accused of killing former social worker Maria Nagirinya and her driver. Isaac Muwata, a High Court judge is set to deliver the judgement after a nearly ten-month trial of the suspects.
These got indicted following the 2019 double homicide.
The suspects are Coporiyamu Kasolo, Lubega alias Etoo alias Manomano alias Rasta. The others are Nasif Kalyango alias Muwonge, Hassan Kiseka alias Masadda, Sharif Mpanga alias Shafiq and Sadat Kateregga Alia’s Barons.
They face charges of six counts of murder, kidnap and aggravated robbery of Maria Nagirinya and her driver, Ronald Kitayimbwa.
Furthermore, two assessors asked court on September 19 to convict the six suspects. They argued that the suspects are liable both individually and collectively because the crimes were committed for the unlawful purpose.
An assessor is a member of the public with no legal training. He/she is provided for under criminal trials and gives their unbinding opinion to court before passing a final verdict.
“…we are of the opinion that at all the occasions, the accused persons were rightly placed at the respective scenes of crime. And, the prosecution proved that they participated in the commission of the offenses they are indicted with,” said Ms Mutonyi, one of the assessors.
