Students happy with USSSA athletics training camp

The Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) athletics training camp that started on January 9th at Old Kampala Secondary School, climaxing (Saturday), January 28th at Makerere University sports ground.

A total of 74 students from all over the country are being trained in several track and field events which include middle distance races (800m, 1500m and 3000m), short distance sprints (100m, 200m and 400m).

Other disciplines include shot put, discus, high jump, long jump and cross country.

The students who are between ages twelve (12) to nineteen (19)  are from selected  districts namely;  Kitgum ,Katakwi, Otuke, Gulu, Serere, Jinja, Oyam, Masindi, Wakiso, Masindi, Agago, Rukungiri, Ngora, Lamwo, Soroti, Kween, Bukwo, Kapchorwa, Hoima, Kabarole, Omoro, Arua, Abim ,Kumi, Tororo, Moyo, Kampala, Wakiso and Butambala.

The training camp organized by USSSA is to help them have Students selected to represent Uganda at the ISF World School Championships, athletics due in June 2023 in Trabzon, Turkey and the ISF Gymnasiade due in August 2023 in Rio de Janeiro ,Brazil.

The selected participants will continue training and will be assessed during the months leading up to the above events.

“Training is good; we are pushing the kids to get to a certain level of fitness because they have not been practicing since the FEASSA games in September, 2023 in Arusha, Tanzania,” Justin Bayiga coach  and former Uganda sprinter, and women rugby sevens player told Wallnetwnews.
