Kisoro – Juveniles at Kampiringisi remand home Kabale are at the risk of losing their lives due to starvation. This was detected Tueasday when about 30 juveniles from the remand home appeared before Kisoro Grade One magistrate his worship Raphael Vueni to answer different charges levied against them.
The juveniles between 14 to 17 age brackets most of them looked malnourished and dehydrated which prompted his worship Raphael Vueni to ask whether they feed the juveniles at the remand home.
An officer who had escorted the juveniles told the magistrate that the number of children at Kabale remand home is overstretching and beyond their capacity. He revealed that 3 children scramble for a meal that is supposed to be for one child in a day because of the big number at the facility.
Some of the juveniles had spent more than 6 months on remand which violets the law. The law requires a juvenile not to spend on remand more than 48 days without being charged. The officer who escorted the juveniles told magistrate that the facility also lacks fuel to transport them from Kabale to Kisoro court on a weekly basis.
Parents who were in the Kisoro Court room yesterday couldn’t hold back tears on seeing how their children were left starving to death. They begged his worship Vueni to issue court bail to their children so that they could go and feed them for a while and return them back after. Some Juveniles were shivering and couldn’t stand on their own.
The magistrate released some juveniles on court bail and others were sent back to Kabale remand home. He cautioned parents that they risk losing their children to armed security officers if they don’t stop engaging into criminality.
He said that nowadays it is dangerous to walk through Kisoro municipality during night hours because of unruly juveniles waylaying residents. He advised parents to carry out their responsibilities ,and raise children well if criminality is to stop in Kisoro.
